He was always one of the few good characters since Season 1. He's my favorite just behind Joyce and Dustin. But his stock shot up so damn high when he got back with Nancy, and then she dumped his ass, yet he took it like a champ.

At the start of Season 3, he hit rock bottom socially (as a school jock), but then there's this girl who immediately shot up into one of the few good characters. Props to the actress because she played it really well. They had great chemistry, a whole adventure where the two of them bonded without interruption, and one of the best scenes in the series. I thought my man Steve would finally get his big break. Yet they had to ruin it. For what? Subversion? They wasted a whole season's worth of character development. They wasted Dustin's stamp of approval. They wasted Steve's moment to finally be happy.

And don't you say it was a good platonic relationship. If this was built up to be a platonic relationship, Steve wouldn't have confessed. It's just poor Steve and the audience getting misled only to be rejected. He even says himself he didn’t view Robin romantically until she confessed to being obsessed with him in the interrogation room.

If she had rejected him for any reason other than being gay, I know my man would have still taken it like a champ anyway. I'm just mad on his behalf and for the wasted effort of building that chemistry. If this was really planned as a platonic relationship, then it's a shitty one.
Inb4 good platonic relationship = dorohedoro

Jeez steve can't catch a break
