Rereading the books - suggestions

I'm just starting to reread The Hobbit and will be moving on to LOTR afterwards. I haven't read the books in at least 15 years but watch the movies regularly. Because it's been sick a long while I'm looking for some input. What are your favourite scenes, conversations, minor characters, etc that I should take note of while reading? I love looking for things in the movies that I may have overlooked previously and I'd like to do the same with the books. I'm not looking for anything in particular, just curious about what other people enjoy that I may have overlooked or not payed attention to.
