AITA for clapping back at my neighbor’s comment about me being “unusual”?
I (F, 30s) have a male neighbor also in his 30s. Over time, our neighborhood acquaintance turned into a close friendship — long walks, thoughtful gifts, good convos. But he’s extremely avoidantly attached, while I used to be anxiously attached. It became a push-pull cycle: he'd be warm and connected, then pull away randomly, creating an addictive dynamic that I now understand as intermittent reinforcement.
Eventually, things soured. I ended the friendship after comments like:
- "You're not my priority in life."
- "My GF thinks your behavior is unusual" (said in a taunting, smug way).
- "This is just a neighborhood relation."
I didn’t respond back then, because I was still stuck in people-pleasing mode and afraid to sever ties completely.
Fast forward 6+ months — we’re still neighbors. He went on vacation with his GF and while he was away, a truck gently hit his parked car. Even though our friendship was over, I still did the decent thing and got all the driver details. I didn’t want to text him myself, so I asked my husband to. In response, he texted my husband the entire backstory of our friendship drama — stuff he already knew, but I found it deeply violating that my ex-friend used this as a chance to unload on my husband when the convo should’ve been strictly about his car.
Later, we met up (mistake on my part — I should’ve let it be). He was condescending and rude, which I sadly expected. I brought up how disrespectful it felt to be told his GF found my behavior “unusual.” In response, I said:
He got super offended, said I insulted his GF, and threatened to walk out. He even told me I should ask people online if that was really an insult. So... here I am. Given all the context, I felt like I was just being direct and finally pushing back after two years of being quiet and respectful.
AITA?
