How do RS girls prefer to be approached in public

I hate the apps and want to meet girls more "naturally", but I'm never sure of the best way to do it. If we're in a store and I think a girls cute I'll make a comment about something in the store or compliment her outfit to strike up a convo. Or if I'm in the park, I'll try to catch her eye and smile (but sometimes that feels creepy). What would make you feel most comfortable? I don't know I'm probably just too anxious and overthinking it all. I live in Manhattan if that matters
