What majors would you recommend for rising college students interested in STEM?

Experienced

I have a nephew who is entering his senior year of HS and interested in computer science and STEM in general. I’m a senior software engineer with ~8 years of experience, I did just ok as an undergrad but had pretty much no issues finding a job right out of college in 2017 and working my way up to senior. However, I know things are much more difficult these days for aspiring entry level software engineers. I get the sense that if I was graduating now instead of when I did, I would be in a trickier position.

With all that said, what STEM majors would you recommend for kids who are applying for college now? I have a few friends in other engineering disciplines, but I’m not as knowledgeable about those fields. Does anyone still recommend majoring in CS these days, like do you think our field will bounce back eventually for entry level roles? If not, what other STEM-related careers would you recommend for aspiring college students these days? I’d love to tell my nephew to follow in my own footsteps, especially because he’s interested in CS, but given that things are a bit tougher now, I don’t want to guide him down the wrong path.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
