AITA for refusing to get help for my "gambling problem" even though my girlfriend thinks I need it?
I (22M) have been with my girlfriend (21F) for about three years. Things have always been good between us we’ve got a strong connection, a lot of laughs, and we've talked about building a future together. But lately, we’ve been having some serious issues, and it’s all centered around one thing: gambling.
Over the past year or so, I’ve gotten more into betting. Mostly sports betting, fantasy leagues, and placing wagers with friends and coworkers. It started off casual $20 here, $50 there just for fun. But over time, I started taking it more seriously, placing bigger bets when I felt confident. I won't lie I’ve had some bad runs. One month, I ended up losing about $4,000, which was the worst it’s ever been. That sucked, but I took the hit and moved on. I didn’t fall behind on bills, and I never asked anyone for money.
To me, it’s just a hobby. Something that keeps things interesting, gives me something to look forward to during the week. I’ve never thought of it as a “problem.” I’m responsible with my life I work full-time, pay for everything I need, and stay on top of my priorities.
But my girlfriend doesn’t see it that way. A few weeks ago, she sat me down and said she’s really worried about how much I’ve been betting. She says I talk about it constantly, get moody when I lose, and seem obsessed with trying to win my money back. She told me she thinks I have a gambling problem and that I should get help therapy, support groups, something.
I told her I don’t think it’s that serious. I don’t hide it, I’m not in financial trouble, and I don’t think it’s controlling my life. But she didn’t take that well. She said “that’s what addicts always say” and told me if I’m not willing to take a step back and at least try to get help, she’s not sure she wants to stay in this relationship.
Now we’re barely talking. She’s distant, frustrated, and I can tell she’s pulling away because I won’t agree with her on this. From my perspective, I don’t see how I'm the bad guy it’s my money, my time, and I’m still handling my responsibilities. But maybe I’m too close to it to see clearly.
AITA for refusing to get help for something I don’t believe is actually a problem?
