Desperately need help, feel like I'm at the end of my rope here and I was placed on a PIP--can someone help?

Hey guys,

This isn't the first time I posted here about this topic, but I've gotten little to no feedback and I'm feeling desperate for help, so I'm giving it another shot. I'm working in a job as a Sr Staff Accountant and I can't stand it anymore. This was my first internal accounting role and I've been here nearly 3 years, I've had initial struggles coming in (harsh reviewer, lack of support, lack of structure all paired with this being my first internal role), but then I rode a year and a half of great work with glowing reviews in my final two reviews. Last year there was a massive amount of turnover (all but my role and one other) and despite all of this I stayed and did my best to help carry the weight. Fastforward to halfway through the new year and I'm being placed on a PIP for lack of understanding that they feel a Sr Staff Accountant should have, and repeated mistakes.

I've been working as an accountant in some capacity for 5 years, two in public at two different roles and now nearly three years here. Throughout my career I've felt inadequate in the field and felt like a square peg in a round hole, but my education and CPA certificate make me feel conflicted as I graduated with honors, held a high GPA in my core classes, and passed off of my CPA exams with flying colors on the first attempt within a calendar year. I just constantly feel like I'm not good at my job, and I desperately need a change, I'm not stuck working at a company where they are going to show me the door in sixty days, the new director is incredibly hostile and difficult, and now they're revoking my hybrid privilege which means I'll have to come into office 5 days a week with a 2 hour round trip commute.

I feel like I have absolutely no direction and no course of action that allows me to quit this job and pursue a career that's a better fit for me. I've tried so long and so hard to make these accounting roles work, but I'm just getting to a point where I feel like 5 years of education, a year of exam taking and 5 years of work experience are all going down the drain and I don't know my next step. I just need help finding the right fit for me, and seeing what jobs exist out in the world that I might be better suited for. Right now the best I've got is that I learned basic SQL and have been teaching myself Tableau to find an entry level data analytics style role but that would take time to get ready for application--and that's assuming that I get hired.

I have a degree in accounting, I have a valid CPA license in my state, I tend to do best in environments that are more structured and where expectations and performance measures are clear. I'm very well spoken and my communication skills are a strong suite, and I love to learn and speak publicly. I don't do well in high stress environments, and I find I'm happiest with my work when it's a true 9-5 schedule and the need for overtime is as needed but not expected routinely or systematically. At this point I'm willing to take anything that gets me out of this role so I can confidently leave this company with my middle fingers up, but I'm just at a loss for what kind of roles I can find with my background that are not accounting and that won't require additional schooling or extending periods of time learning and developing skills.
