It's over but it hurts
Hi all, been lurking here for a while but finally wanted to post. I (27F) started dating a really great guy (29M) back in 2023, he'd drink around me on dates but wasn't really getting drunk. 1.5yrs in my job relocated so he decided to move with me and move in together. Well, with that came the drinking. I guess he always did it and I didn't really see it when we lived apart, but it became an everyday thing. Get off work early (WFH), sit on the patio, drink 8-10 beers, smoke a bunch of weed and cigarettes. Stumble in around 7-8pm, sometimes earlier. First it felt like a slap to the face, because who is this guy?? Well we talked about it, and tried to make plans, but it didn't stop. Date nights constantly cancelled, sex less frequent than oil changes, rude comments and 1-2 drunk blowups, it's all going downhill. Like clockwork, I'd get mad, we'd talk about it, come up with a "solution" (only on weekends, only at night, only blah blah) which lasted a week at the longest. His family doesn't know, his friends kinda do but it doesn't affect them, at the end of the day, I'm the one who gets the brunt of it. Well after a year of "trying" and solutions, I finally break it off. 2.5yrs gone but I'm so tired, I've lost my spark, I look and feel like dogshit. At first, he was shocked. He knows it bothered him and I made it clear our last 'solution' was the ultimatum, and yet he thought things were going great. We talked about it and he admits he thought I'd indefinitely put up with it until he eventually maybe decided to change. And honestly, that's one of the worst parts of how he took my patience for granted. He accused me of "giving up" and not giving him enough time, but how much time is enough? The rest of my life? We're in the process of moving out and he's been constantly drunk and currently raging angry at me. This has been a financial hit but right now, I'm very ready to leave and scared to be around him. A few of my friends know the real reason for the breakup, but I'm assuming a lot of people think I'm the bad guy. I've been trying to find some comfort, but everything I see says I'm the bad guy for breaking up and not trying hard enough. That I wasn't committed or loving enough. I think I made the right choice, but it still hurts and I feel incredibly guilty.
