To everyone posting about dorm assignments!
Just wanted to throw this out there in case it can help soothe the masses:
The dorm you’re in will not make or break your experience.
I think this analogy fits pretty well: Do you remember who was in your highschool homeroom class? I certainly don’t. But I do remember caring a lot, because I was coming into a new environment, and that was a variable with a daily impact, and I felt like I had some control over it. It was the first thing I knew, and the first context I was put in, so it felt very important.
It wasn’t, though. So much else happened! I met people and discovered interests (and so much of myself) through other classes and clubs, sports teams, friends of friends, random interactions in hallways, and unexpected run-ins. In an alternate universe, could homeroom have been a big part of my experience? Sure. But is that something that I missed in my life, here in this universe? Not one bit.
The same thing will be true for you and your freshman dorm. Parts of it might suck, and parts of it might be great. But unless you’re one heck of an outlier, or you happened to get roomed next to your future besties for life, you aren’t going to look back on your dorm placement and see it as a great determining factor in your college experience. It will be one of many, just like homeroom.
I hope this helps.
