Does this pattern continue into the rest of the series?
I have this pet peeve with media where the main characters are downtrodden and face defeat after defeat until the end when they emerge victorious and then the next season, book, movie etc. brings them right back down to being beaten with defeat after defeat again so they can reach the same triumphant height of the first climax. I’m concerned WoR will be the same.
This book is great and I did enjoy it, but the constant defeats that Kaladin faces time after time is not something I’m sure I could put up with for another 300k words in the second book just for the satisfaction of triumph at the very end. I could deal with it if it’s just emphasized in the first book to illustrate how far Kaladin will have grown from bridge duty, and it did deliver a very satisfying climax, but I just finished this book for the second time after a year or two and its giving me pause before I continue with the second.
I don’t remember feeling this way with his other books but I haven’t read Sanderson for a couple years except for finishing this just now. And I feel like I have to put in a whole bunch of qualifiers so I don’t get wailed on here. Like I know not every book probably ends in triumph, I know character development is important, I know that the climax is kind of the thing with Sanderson, etc. this is just a personal taste thing.
Is the same story beat of the main characters losing the entire 3/4 of the book a strong pattern in the rest of the series?
