Klint from [The Perfect Bag](https://www.youtube.com/@ThePerfectBag) is my favorite reviewer. His videos taught me a lot about finding deals, shopping secondhand with a sharp eye, and also about buying with joy. I think this bag encapsulates all of that: a guilt-free purchase, with a story—and one I appreciate more each day.

Earlier this year, I traveled to Japan with my wife and son. It was mostly for work, but we made the most of the month, even in the middle of January. It was my second time there, but this time I came better prepared—not just in terms of Japanese culture, but also bag knowledge (thank you so much, r/mannybaggers!). I learned so much about Japanese brands, materials, and design thanks to Klint’s videos and this community. While most things in retail stores were crazy expensive, **Second Street** was a different story. I ended up buying four amazing bags in three different stores, but this was without a doubt the crown jewel: a **Master-piece 2Way Messenger Bag**. For thirty dollars. Thirty. Nearly new. Made in Japan. Tucked among so many great bags, almost like it was waiting for me. Sold with a smile that felt especially generous in the cold.

It’s made from a soft navy nylon—nothing like stiff Cordura—and has suede and leather accents that contrast beautifully. It’s slim in structure, which makes it elegant and comfortable to carry, either on the shoulder or by hand. It *can* be used as a backpack, but I rarely do: it doesn’t open clamshell-style, and when overstuffed, it loses that graceful slimness I love. That said, as you’ll see in the photos, it fits several large books and then some. The internal layout is smart. There are external pockets and several inside, including one I really appreciate: an elastic strap pocket to secure a water bottle on the inside, since it has no external bottle holders. Nothing feels random.

I started using it the same day I bought it, and it felt just right. That leather handle alone makes you want to carry it everywhere — soft to the touch, firm in structure, with metal hardware that adds just the right amount of edge. It looks bright navy in the rain.

I know—I’m getting carried away.

But just let me say this: it feels like a quiet tribute to Japanese meticulousness—the careful selection of nylon, suede, leather, metal—nothing flashy, everything intentional. It doesn’t try to look like a formal bag, but it’s not informal either. I really admire that balance. It feels durable, though to be honest, I do feel a bit of fear every time I use it.

I guess I’m not just writing about a bag. I’m writing about a memory — and hoping I won’t lose it. Sometimes I think we bag collectors talk too much about liters, zippers, and specs. But there’s another side to this. The story. What you were doing when you found the bag. What it brings back. How it makes you feel when you wear it.
