How Many Solar Batteries for a Home Solar System?
Key Factors That Determine Battery Quantity:
Daily Power Consumption
Measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Example: If your home uses 20 kWh per day, and you want one day of backup, you'll need batteries that can store at least 20 kWh.
Battery Capacity
Each battery has a rated capacity, such as 5 kWh, 10 kWh, or 20 kWh.
Divide your required storage by the usable capacity of one battery.
⚠️ Note: Usable capacity is often 80–90% of total rated capacity.
Backup Duration
How many hours or days do you want the system to run without solar input?
Example: For two days of backup at 20 kWh/day, you need 40 kWh of storage.
Solar System Type
Grid-tied with battery backup: May require fewer batteries (used mostly for backup).
Off-grid: Needs enough batteries to cover all energy needs (plus extra for cloudy days).
Depth of Discharge (DoD) & Efficiency
High-quality lithium batteries often have a DoD of 90–95%.
Efficiency losses (inverter, wiring) reduce usable power.
