Honeycomb Hollow and the Crystal Lilies - Cozy Fantasy One-Shot
I ran a Cozy Fantasy one-shot in Daggerheart and it was a fantastic cinematic masterpiece. I've GM'd ALOT of QuickStart Adventures since the beta, but now that launch is here I'm breaking away to do more creative games and I've chosen to start with some Cozy Fantasy One-Shots. I used the One-Shot guidance on CRB 184 with a custom fill-in-the-blank and worksheet, some custom environments and adversaries, and five characters I pre-generated ahead of time, and we were off. We spent about 45 minutes in "Phase 0" in lieu of a session 0, and the entire adventure took about 3.25 hours for a nice even 4 hour one-shot.
The party helped set the scene. A village known for its Hexagonal architecture, Honeycomb Hollow, has a problem. The blooming meadows surrounding the village become vibrant with Crystalline Lilies once every 10-15 years, it's been 15 years since the last blooming the lilies are ripe with young blossoms but fall is only weeks away and an early frost could spoil the blooms and this entire generation of crystal lilies could be lost.
The party, a group of locals (Olivia Starweaver, Finn Bricket, Rowan Ironheart, Sage Halwell, Riley Mead) started our adventure meeting with Beerich, a botanist who lives at the edge of Honeycomb Hollow who studies the crystalline lilies and the properties of their leaves, petals, and the honey produced when the bees feed on the lily pollen. Two things were clear. One, the flowers seem healthy but their buds have been green for weeks and are not ripening into their signature purple tinge signifying they are about to bloom. Two, if the blossoms don't bloom and crystalize before the first frost of fall, there's no telling when the next generation of lilies will bloom.
What followed was an investigation led by the Hope and Fear rolls of the party as they found the meadows were infested with badgertoads and the presents of pollutants in the river, a Farmer secretly experimenting with a new fertilizer, his wife Bonnie who leaked their secret to the town's outcast Jenkins who turned out to be Jenkin's Evil Badgertoad Wizard Twin Brother, Bobby! Who'd stolen the fertilizer to try to increase this years Crystal Lily Yield with plans to industrialize Crystal Lilly production if it succeeded. However, things went wrong and the spicy organic fertilizer slowed the lilies growth and may have put the entire generation of lilies at risk!
After a successful parley with Bobby, he agreed to use his Badgertoad swarm to clear the meadows of the fertilizer pellets he'd previously had them bury throughout the meadow. Then, with the help of Olivia's wizard mentor, the group completed a montage of rolls to setup for a ritual that would summon a rainstorm to cleanse the soil and flush the river. The party built levees to protect the village from flooding and defended the wizard mentor as they summoned the storm and along with it water elementals that threatened to wash away the ritual circle and the wizard along with it.
After several successful tag team rolls to keep the levees secure and the water elementals at bay, the ritual was complete. The soil was washed, the river flushed, and a week later the party gathered at the Festival of Blooming Lilies reflecting on their teamwork as they watched the crystalline lilies twinkingly in the light of sunset.
Daggerheart really shined in this one-shot and I couldn't have asked for a better group to go on this adventure with me! There was mystery, intrigue, a surprising twist, and in the end the community came together to help the party maintain the ritual and save the lilies!
I'm still riding the high of that session and stoked to do it all again when I run another Cozy Collaborative One-Shot this weekend!
