Background Check Concern – Disclosed Past Employment Issue, Still a Chance?
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice or insight from anyone who might have experienced something similar.
I applied at Citibank last May and received a job offer, which I’ve already signed. I also completed my pre-employment medical exam. My original start date was supposed to be July 14, but it’s now moved to July 28 because my background check hasn’t cleared yet.
During the background check, I was asked if I had ever been asked to resign or if I had filed a case against a previous employer. I answered yes to both, and I provided full context.
Here’s what happened: In my previous job, a call I handled was selected for calibration with QA and a client. They claimed that the process wasn’t followed properly. I had a coaching session with my team lead and was told everything was good and it wouldn’t be a ground for termination. However, two weeks later, I was informed that my system access had been removed and I was advised to file a resignation. I felt this was unfair, as there was no proper admin hearing or due process.
I consulted with a lawyer who encouraged me to file a case with the NLRC (National Labor Relations Commission). I pursued it and won, receiving 6-digit monetary compensation.
I submitted all required documents and completed the background screening form on June 26. Citi’s background screening team reached out for further context, which I provided honestly.
I followed up with the recruiter and was told that the delay in my start date is due to the background check still being in progress. Now, I can’t help but overthink — did I ruin my chances by being too honest? I keep wondering if I should have just not disclosed it at all, but I really wanted to do the right thing.
Has anyone here gone through something similar? Do I still stand a chance of getting hired?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.
