Is self harming for attention valid?

The vast majority of people shame others for self harming or in my case cutting themselves for attention I just wanna say I would never show it to anyone I would have blood stains in my room, let my sleeves ride up,etc. It kinda led to a way to cope rather than to get attention. I know people will automatically say yes since its a person who does it for attention directly asking but if it was brought up in a discussion would you says it’s not valid or weird.

Edit: people are saying it’s a way to ask for help without verbally asking.. when I used to cut for attention I didn’t need help I needed attention as I was getting heavily neglected at home which at the time didn’t know was abuse.
