Curriculum planning help

Former special education teacher here. My degree was a Special Education Generalist (K-12). I want to make this post brief but feel free to ask any clarifying questions.

I never felt like I was successful as a teacher. I taught high school resource room fresh out of college. I never felt like I was doing well at planning curriculum, and only took one college course in doing that for my generalist degree. I always felt lost with this… I would ask admin what kind of curriculum they’d like me to implement and they would say “you’re the expert, figure it out.” My very first job as a high school teacher, a student was shot to death about 2 blocks from our school, and then covid happened soon after. I never did get the chance to join a professional induction program and get the mentorship I needed. Although I had asked our admin to help with this or how I could join an induction program, our high school was a revolving door (4 principals in 2.5 years.) In hindsight, I was just trying to survive and keep up with the case management part of my job. I never felt like I did particularly well with creating curriculum.

I’m currently a school bus driver. I like it well enough but I would like to return to the classroom, and my annual pay is currently only like 37K a month. My sister is pregnant with a little boy who will be born with Down Syndrome, and I’ve always enjoyed working with students who have special needs. Does anyone have any tips on how to return to a classroom and do better with curriculum planning and how to structure classroom?
