Filial responsibility laws?!
What kind of crazy batshit logic is this- making adult children pay for the care of their abusive parent? I was mindlessly scrolling videos & learnt about filial responsibility laws & now am going down a rabbit hole.
I thought I was finally free- going NC with my narcissistic father, moving to a different state from the last address he knew, starting a new job, etc.. And now I find out I might be forced to pay for his care if he moves to one of those 20 something states that have that law? How’s this even fair?
He always saw the money he put into my education as investments for his future. This is something he picked up from his mother who made it her goal to cash in on said investment by making him pay for her jewelry & expensive dinners when my parents were newly married & my mom wanted to save because she was pregnant with me. Now reading about these laws just supports this mindset.
It’s also very discouraging. I was looking forward to finally getting my life to go where I want & save up for my future. But now I’m like I don’t want to work hard & save up just so he can vindictively force me to pay for his care after gambling away his money or writing his wealth off to someone else. I thought I left all this behind when I moved to the US. The main reason I don’t want to go back to my home country is because culturally children are expected to treat parents like god & take care of them however the relationship with the parent be.
