Was Voldy snaky before he died the first time?

I’ve only seen the movies and not read the books and I know he’s even snakier when he comes back in the books but my question is about when he was in power during the first wizarding war. Was he just a normal looking dude before the killing curse backfired on him when he tried to kill Harry? Or did he get more and more inhuman-looking as he split himself into more horcruxes? If he was normal before, were his followers shocked by his appearance when he came back? Is it ever explained exactly why he looks snaky at all?
