Theft in Changing Room at Patna Club

💁‍♂️ Opinion / राय

Hi everyone,I’m reaching out for your opinions and advice on a distressing theft incident that happened to me on July 3, 2025, in the changing room of the Patna Club’s swimming facility in Bihar, India. I’m a regular guest user of the pool, but the club’s lack of security and the manager’s dismissive attitude after I complained have left me shocked. I’m sharing every detail to get your thoughts on what I should do next.On July 3, around 5:30 PM, I arrived at the Patna Club with my mother. I was running late, and when I got to the changing room, there were no empty lockers available. The club doesn’t provide keys for the lockers they have, so I had no choice but to leave my bag near the sink area in the changing room. After swimming, I returned to find my bag had been moved to one of the cubicles. When I checked it, everything except my clothes, towel, and phone was stolen. The stolen items included stationery I’d bought that day for Rs. 808 (I have the receipt) and personal care products. Two other girls reported similar thefts in the changing room at the same time, which points to a serious security problem. The next day, July 4, I was present when the club finally showed the changing room’s camera footage, but only after I made repeated requests. The camera in-charge was talking to his wife on the phone and mentioned that she saw a suspicious school-going girl in the changing room. The girl was looking into others’ lockers, acting like she was searching for something. When the woman noticed her, the girl quickly hid behind the curtains and didn’t come out for a while. When the woman removed the curtains, the girl was terrified and said, “I didn’t do anything,” which seems very suspicious and suggests she’s the culprit. On July 5, after I went to complain about the theft, a staff member from the swimming department dismissed the suspicion, saying the girl is a long-time member and an “officer’s daughter,” and they refused to share her identity or investigate her further. The swimming department in-charges had no clue about the incident initially. Worse, the manager got defensive and told me to “quit swimming here” if I wasn’t happy and said there’s “no policy of compensation” for such incidents. The manager even told me to keep valuable items near the counter, but I didn’t consider my toiletries and stationery as “valuable,” and honestly, shouldn’t a girl be able to bring her basic toiletries to the pool without worrying about theft? This was incredibly frustrating, especially since their lack of secure lockers forced me to leave my bag in an open area.I’ve emailed the Patna Club, asking them to investigate, identify the culprit, return my stolen items, compensate me for my losses, and improve security by providing lockers with keys. They haven’t responded or taken any responsibility, which feels completely unfair. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation at a club, gym, or facility with poor security and unhelpful management? How did you handle it when staff dismissed your complaint or refused to compensate? What can I do when the culprit might be a minor and the club is protecting her identity? I’m wondering what steps I can take to hold the Patna Club accountable or recover my losses. Any advice, experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
