Is this a good first bike for someone that wants a versatile bike?

I'm mainly gonna be going back and forth to work but want something I can also go on backroads/trails when I want to, the klr650 seems like the perfect bike but figured I should ask the people that own them before I commit, also if it is which generation should I go for? I don't mind doing maintenence so the older ones don't scare me but im not sure which generation would vest fit my needs/wants
