Credit card transactions question (possibly dumb question)

It seems like every sales reporting type thing takes space out to break down what kind of cards were used in your sales for the period... Meaning separate numbers for VISA, MasterCard and AmEx... My question is why? Why would you need to know that? It seems like a pointless metric. Am I missing something? Or is a credit card a credit card a credit card?
