wibtah if i called off work for a mental health day?
i know compared to most of these posts this seems really inconsequential. i work at a daycare and went from not working at all when i came home from college to working 8 hours a day at a daycare, every day. the last two days, i have had panic attacks from being so overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted.
management and some of my coworkers treat me like trash. i’ve been at this daycare for summer and winter breaks for over 2 years now, yet people talk down to me like i’m stupid and just started the job. the kids are absolutely out of control. on monday i had kids screaming right into my face, swearing at me, and throwing banana peels and crackers at me during snack. today, my coworker scolded me for not ignoring all the crying babies (12 of them, all under 8 months old) and i got to the point where i was so overstimulated and frustrated that i started to cry. all the while, i was doing the work of two people in one classroom. i feel so overworked and under appreciated.
here’s the problem: i’ve only been back at work for a little over a week now. technically i’ve been an employee for 2 years, but we have new management and a ton of staff were recently fired. i already had to ask to go home an hour early on monday bc my pots syndrome was out of control with the heat.
however i fear if i go back tomorrow after how the last two days have been, on top of the severe lack of sleep i’ve been experiencing (i’ve been having awful nightmares about the daycare every night since i went back) that i will just simply walk out and quit. i would leave a voicemail explaining that i cannot come in for my mental health, but they require you to call in sick the day of. i work an hour after opening to an hour before closing and i worry they’ll be super mad, and even consider firing me. i cannot afford to get a new job right now but my sanity is also at stake at this point. would i be an asshole for calling off sick tomorrow morning an hour before i have to go in, to spare my mental health?
tldr; work has caused me to have a panic attack two days in a row from feeling extremely overworked and overwhelmed. due to policy, i cannot call in for a mental health day until the day of and work an hour after they open, leaving them on short notice. wondering if i’d be an asshole for prioritizing my mental health but potentially messing with the schedule that day, and risking getting in hot water with my boss.
