Psychology Background, Unsure About PhD vs Law School — What’s the Best Career Path in the U.S.?

Social Sciences

Hi everyone,

I’m a 25-year-old international student currently in the U.S. completing my master’s thesis in psychology. I did my BSc in Psychology (GPA: 3.85) and am now finishing my master’s (current GPA: 3.80). I studied outside of US and came here as an exchange student decided to stay.

I’m feeling very uncertain about my next steps and would really appreciate guidance from anyone who’s gone through a similar process or has insights into the U.S. job market.

I’m most passionate about Clinical Psychology and would love to apply to PhD programs, but I know how competitive public programs are and how expensive private ones can be. Based on my background, my highest chance of acceptance seems to be in Social Psychology PhD programs — but I’m hesitant because of the unclear career prospects.

Several people have suggested that, given my psychology background, I consider applying to Law School instead. It’s 3 years (vs 5–7 for a PhD), and the career path is more structured with potentially higher income — especially in the U.S.

If anyone here is a clinical psychologist, has pursued a Social Psych PhD, or transitioned from psych to law, I’d be truly grateful for your perspective. Or if you have any other suggestions based on my academic record and international status, I’d appreciate any insight.

Thank you so much 🙏
