Advice leading up to surgery 1

I am going in for my first surgery out of 3 for my Ulcerative Colitis, with the plan for me to have the jpouch in a year. Any advice for adjusting to life with a stoma? How long were you in the hospital for? How long until I can pick my cats up again?
