I’m thinking about getting a weapon to defend my family from fascists. Where do I start?

Basically the title. I’ve not always been pro gun, in fact I’ve been anti gun most of my life, but what’s happening in our country… ICE, Mango Mussolini, etc. It makes me scared, not just for myself but for my family. I’m starting to change my views on this issue, and I think I’m ready to start looking into arming myself for the sake of my family’s safety. Where should I start? How do I start? How do I know what kind of weapon is good for me?
