What makes Arjuna Alter an Alter?

I am still playing through his lostebelt, but was wondering what actually makes him an Alter? He's not like Jalter who was made on the grail. He's got both evil and lawful alignments. Is it because he let go of his humanity and so much of his original self and essentially ceased to be Arjuna?
