Looking for a children’s book (possibly an anthology) from the 1980s or earlier — Penny & the Elf + Mrs. Here-and-There’s bakery

UNSOLVED

Hi everyone! I’m trying to track down a children’s book I read in the 1980s (possibly published earlier — maybe the 60s or 70s). I believe it may have been an anthology or story collection, as I remember two distinct stories from it:

⸻

  1. Penny and the Elf • The main character was a little girl named Penny. • She was guided by or followed an elf. • A major part of the story involved Penny having to figure out which keys unlocked a series of small doors. • The doors may have led to magical spaces or rooms — almost like a light fantasy adventure. • There may have been a slight puzzle/mystery feel to it — not scary, just curious and whimsical. • Not a pop-up or peekaboo book. Full-page color illustrations, possibly mid-century style.

⸻

  1. Mrs. Here-and-There’s Bakery • The second story involved a female baker, possibly named Mrs. Here-and-There (that name stuck with me). • She had a bakery full of cakes, cookies, and frosting everywhere — very sensory and vibrant. • The dialogue included a patron or customer observing her “bustling around the bakery” — so I believe it was told from another character’s point of view or included narration that described her actions in detail. • There may also have been a lemonade stand or lemonade reference, possibly in the same story or in another from the same book.

⸻

This may have been a small hardcover (possibly around 30–40 pages per story), or a multi-story compilation. I’ve already ruled out: • A Penny for Candy • Penny and Pete’s Surprise • The Blueberry Pie Elf • Mr. Snitzel’s Cookies • What’s in the Bakery Truck? • The Gingerbread Man

If this rings a bell or you know of any obscure anthologies or gift books (possibly from Hallmark or a small press) that include these stories, I’d be so grateful!
