sacrificing mental health for a future career?
i'm 22 and for around almost a decade now have been dealing with a mild/moderate anxiety disorder. It started when I underwent something traumatic at 13/14ish and has been a constant in my life ever since. I did go to therapy very briefly when I was in high school but stopped after less than a year because it seemed like it wasn't worth the money and was making no difference. I have never taken any sort of anti-anxiety medication mostly because my family isn't the most understanding around mental health and I've always got the feeling that they would shame me for it (I understand that stigmas around mental health medication are harmful, I just didn't feel like subjecting myself to judgment). The anxiety has never interfered with my day-to-day life or made me nonfunctional; I've learned to just suck it up/deal with it and most people don't even realize I have it unless I tell them. However it does tend to just make things pretty uncomfortable for me and I'd rather go without it if I had the option.
I'm also a law student and for years my ultimate career goal has been to attempt to get an army or navy commission after graduating and serve as a JAG officer (which is basically an active-duty military officer overseeing legal operations and the legal branch). The selection process is extremely rigorous and I've been told that any indication of having ever relied on psych medications of any kind in the past will get your application thrown out without further consideration. So I really don't know what to do at this point. Like I said I am completely functional without any medication and my day-to-day performance is not affected outwardly at all by my anxiety. Most people who know me personally would be surprised to find out that I even have it because I have consistently made every effort to succeed despite it. But obviously it's inwardly extremely uncomfortable to have to deal with and something I would really just rather do without. I don't want to go on anxiety medication and screw up my chance at the career I've been aiming for for years now but also feel like it would be wrong to totally sacrifice mental health for a job that I ultimately may not even be selected into. Advice?
