Worried I might have developed bipolar and not noticed because of my ADHD symptoms.

Undiagnosed

Hi all, for context I’m 18m and have only have an ADHD diagnoses. My dad has both adhd and bipolar disorder, both diagnosed. (I don’t know much about that though because I don’t talk to my dad often.) I’ve also struggled with anxiety pretty bad my whole life, but haven’t ever seen someone consistently to get proper treatment or diagnoses.

This past year, and even more so recently, I’ve been smoking a lot of weed. Other than a two 1-month long breaks, my consumption has been practically daily. I’m currently on my fourth day of not smoking because I noticed it was making my anxiety a lot worse. This time I don’t plan on going back for a very long time and haven’t had any difficulties in stopping at all.

Anyway, what the main point of this post is about; due to my genetic predisposition to bipolar disorder, and my daily marijuanna consumption, I’ve started really worrying thinking I might have bipolar type 2. As I understand it, heavy cannabis consumption can greatly increase one’s chance of developing BD and psychosis. I’ve checked the symptoms of hypomania, and some of them hit the nail right on the head for me. Like, occasionally I’ll have periods of time where I feel unstoppable and like a million bucks, then I’ll go right back to feeling depressed and anxious. To me this could be a symptom of hypomania, or could just be brief periods where I’m happy during longer spells of being down and I really don’t know how to tell the difference. Some of the other symptoms (flight of ideas, finding it hard to keep still, irritability, etc.) concern me too. But these could all also be explained by my ADHD as they’re also symptoms of ADHD.

The main things that stops me from believing this worry of mine is that I haven’t ever noticed distinct phases really. I feel like most of the time, I feel stressed, and down, and anxious, and I only feel “manic” for a short period (few days-weeks max) when something good happens in my life, like hitting it off with someone I had romantic interest in, or a big win at the casino, those kinds of things. So to me these “hypomanic” phases are few and far between as I would say a large majority of the time I don’t feel that way. Also they seem triggered by something rather than coming on randomly, which I’m not sure is the case for people with BD.

I understand I need to talk to a professional about this and I will; I’m not making this post hoping someone in the comments can diagnose me, rather I’m wondering if this sounds like anyone’s experience with BD, and if I really should be worried or if I am just being overly anxious. Also I apologize if this post is a little messy or hard to read, I typed this up somewhat quickly. Thank you guys!
