We Broke up after 5.5 Years. I never trusted her this whole time. I was right. 2 months post-breakup.
She broke up with me... and saved my life.
We met at university, and I had expectations of who she was. She looked like a powerful woman—someone who told me she was this amazing person who could do "this" and "that." We dated for a week before officially getting together. (Big mistake.)
Throughout the entire relationship, my toxic trait was that I constantly needed reassurance that she wouldn’t cheat on me. I never fought with her or got angry about it—I would just get panic attacks and repeatedly ask her not to cheat on me. But I did this at absurd frequencies. I didn't like her friends, I would see her friends disrespect her and she would just let it happen. She is a serial people pleaser (towards me too). I criticized her when she makes bad decisions, I know I am right, but how I went about criticizing her was toxic and too much (Usually about finances and Employment), I should've just let her have her own mistakes to learn from.
At the beginning of the relationship, I told her I wanted a kid, but just a month later, I realized I didn’t want one—with her. Because deep down, I knew something about her that she didn’t even know I was aware of. And I was right not to trust her.
Just one month in, I found out she was outcasted by her friends. I didn’t really ask why or dig deeper—until I eventually talked to her former friends behind her back. Her past was cruel and chaotic. She had a pattern of overlapping relationships—she was brutal.
Then I heard from one of her exes that I, too, was part of an overlap. While dating him for three months—someone she had already said "I love you" to—she suddenly blindsided him by bragging about being with me. She went on to overlap with two more people before her relationship with him.
I couldn’t trust her because of her past, but I was too much of a coward to confront her. I thought I loved her, so I convinced myself I needed to accept it. I was wrong. She was carrying so much unresolved baggage.
Fast forward three years into the relationship: she tried to break up with me. I managed to get a second chance by making empty promises. But I later found out from her friend group that she had been emotionally involved with a man who already had a partner and two kids—and he confessed to her week before talking about breaking up with me. She was about to overlap again.
Then two months ago from today, she finally broke up with me again, talking about her plans for the future. But by that time, I had been doubtful for years. I was always critical of her life choices—not because I wanted to change her, but because I realized she lacked things I deeply valued. I knew in my heart she would repeat the pattern from her past.
We had our breakup conversation on my mother's birthday—which, coincidentally, was the same day we had the last breakup talk three years ago.
And just like I predicted, she’s now with someone she had known before even meeting me for the first time. I already suspected she had been talking to him for a while. I even caught her messaging him while I was asleep next to her in bed. But I chose to ignore it.
Truth is, I had emotionally clocked out for good seven months earlier. I had fallen in love—not with a person, but with my vision of the future. I found my purpose, I finally found my dreams that I truly want to pursue. But I was a coward for not breaking up with her myself. I’ve been like this my whole life.
Her breaking up with me saved my life.
I never trusted her throughout the relationship. I never touched my inheritance (I'm a sole inheritor for the household) or mentioned it again outside the first few months of our relationship because I couldn’t trust her. She hinted at wanting marriage, but I did nothing—because deep down, I knew I never would.
On the day of the breakup, I felt like I had to at least ask her to marry me—for my own closure. She said no. I just needed to hear that no, so I could seal the relationship emotionally for good.
I never told her any of this—even during the breakup conversation. Knowing her past, I know she won’t learn from it. And when she said there was no future for us, I realized I no longer had a responsibility to help her. I just wanted it to end peacefully. Ignorance is bliss. And it’s for my benefit that she doesn’t know.
Now, all my anxieties are gone. I even had OCD throughout the relationship that completely disappeared after the breakup. I saw a therapist a week after and walked through my entire relationship history. They suggested I may have emotionally checked out within the first year—which is funny, because during the 5.5 years we were together, I never thought of breaking up or being with anyone else.
From the beginning, I told her I was extremely independent and moved on quickly. I had already experienced the biggest heartbreak of my life—losing both of my parents at a young age.
I thought I was in love. But I was just attached. Given her past, I couldn’t trust her. And I was right—her pattern is still continuing. She has a lot of baggage to work through.
But I’m okay now. After greeting her on her birthday for the last time (a few weeks post-breakup), I’ve never looked back.
If you’re reading this, V. (anonymous alias), thank you for breaking up with me. With every fiber of my being—you saved my life. You did what I couldn’t do. I’ve grown so much over the past 5.5 years, but I’ve never grown as much as I have in the two months since our breakup. I finally stopped feeling guilty for doing things I love.
Thank you!
And for those carrying anxieties in relationships. I learned that there's no use fearing if bad things can happen. You are strong, If bad things will happen you will be able to walk through it! Have confidence in that!
I know I'll be single for a looooong time! and I am truly happy for that!
