is forcing sleep meds normal

My girlfriends parents are in general super hard on her, such as yelling at her over a C+, shaming her for her body, her dad hits her when her mom isn't around, and they have sent her to multiple residentials throughout the years. Tonight i found out that they were making her take three different kinds of pills before bed and she told me they're meant to make her sleep and not wake up. They she put it concerned especially because in the past her dad asked her to show him her new bra and underwear with her wearing it. It honestly concerns me what may happen when she's asleep and on meds so she doesn't wake up. Should i be concerned and is them making her take meds to sleep normal?
