Heads Up: Aggressive Religious Recruitment Happening at USC
If you're a USC student, you need to know what's going on.
There’s a group out there — World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) — that's been quietly and aggressively targeting college students across California, including right here on campus. They’re not upfront about who they are. They don’t tell you their real motives. They’re slick, practiced, and calculated.
Here’s how it usually goes:
Someone walks up to you and asks, “Have you heard of God the Mother?” or invites you to a “Bible study” or “free seminar.” Sounds innocent enough — but here’s the problem: they don’t say what group they’re with, and once they’ve got your attention, they push hard to get you into one-on-one meetings off campus.
Where they’ve been spotted:
- Trousdale Parkway, outside campus housing
- The Grove, LA Live, Century City Mall
- CSUN, UCLA, and right here at USC
- Northridge Fashion Center — especially evenings
- Topanga Mall, where security has had to step in regularly
This is a well-organized operation. They’ve even tried to twist free speech laws to argue they have a right to solicit on private property — and security has had to remove them multiple times.
Why this matters:
This group isn’t just some quirky offshoot. Former members, investigative journalists, and cult experts have all flagged WMSCOG as a high-control organization that preys on vulnerable students — especially internationals and those new to the city.
We’re talking about tactics like:
- Hiding their identity at first contact
- Guilt and fear-based theology
- Isolating people from family and friends
- Recruiting under false pretenses
- Pushing boundaries on campus and in malls
USC is a prime target.
It’s a high-profile school filled with smart, open-minded students who don’t always expect deception. That’s exactly why groups like this show up here. They count on people being polite or curious. Don’t fall for it.
What you should do:
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.
- You don’t owe anyone your time or attention — walk away.
- Report anything shady to campus security or Student Affairs.

I’ve pulled together deeper background from former members, investigators, and experts. I’m also tracking a proposed California bill that would protect minors and college students from coercive recruitment. Check my profile if you want to read more — I’ve posted sources and breakdowns there. No spam, no pitches — just info.
Stay alert, ask questions, and don’t let anyone take advantage of your trust. That’s how we protect our campus and each other.
