Treatment for Elderly Family Member
My mother in law, 87, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She already has COPD and congestive heart failure. She hasn’t seen an oncologist yet, but I’m wondering if at this age and with her existing conditions if they would even consider treating it.
She is active, gets out daily, drives, and is pretty darn spry for someone that’s 87. That said, with her other diagnoses, especially the congestive heart failure, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll just go to palliative care as the symptoms occur. I know that there are some serious lifestyle changes that are advised with this type of cancer, and I know that she is a very active social drinker along with her circle of friends. I’m not sure how that would play out. I am sure taking her alcohol away would be unpleasant for her - she’s no alcoholic by any means, but it’s part of her social life.
At this point just gathering information and waiting for an oncologist appointment. Thanks in advance for any advice or direction.
