Religion as an essay topic?

I read that it was pretty risky topic, and I feel like it is especially in my case since the schools I wanna get into are pretty religious (most of my country is heavily religious)

I'm not exactly atheist im kinda a lukewarm catholic but I wanna write about how seeing different views of religion throughout my life while often if not always believing in science built my perspective of religion and the purpose of life itself, I have a few examples and experiences I wanna include but idk if its a good topic if not what are some non-risky topics that are similar?
