new getting into biking, thoughts on fixies?

My neighbor was getting rid of a fairly decent/new condition bike, and I thought I'd buy it off him for whatever reason (idk). Turns out it's a fixie (never heard of them before), and he told me all about it. Last time I biked was probably a few years ago, but I got the idea that I'd be nice to take it with me around my uni. Anyways what are y'alls thoughts on a fixie, and having it for someone in my case who hasn't biked in a while (want to change this).
