Need help on what to say when my five year old says she just wants one house

Discussion

Last night my five year old, in the midst of bedtime drama, started sobbing that she just wants to snuggle with me forever and that she doesn’t want to leave. She said that she has too many houses (mine, her dad’s, occasional sleepovers with my parents, and now sometimes sleepovers at her dad’s girlfriend’s house) and she just wants to be at mine.

Now. I know she is safe and loved and taken care of when she is not with me. I know she enjoys being with her dad and enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and having sleepovers at her house. I know she has a blast at her grandparent sleepovers. I am not looking to adjust anything based on an over-tired outburst. Though I will put a pause on grandparent sleepovers for the time being because those are supposed to be fun, not added stress.

But, what I want to know is what you say to validate the feelings about not wanting to change houses and not wanting to have to say goodbye to mommy all the time. Because even if she doesn’t need to stop shifting houses and even if it would be detrimental to her to stop shifting houses (because, again, her dad is a good dad and I respect their relationship and never want to do anything to harm it), her feelings are valid.

It is a lot having to go between houses with different rules and expectations. Dad’s girlfriend has two boys the same age as her and her sister so there’s a lot of adjusting going on there too.

Last night I just held her until she calmed down and reminded her that I love her, I will always give her snuggles when she’s with me, and that her daddy and daddy’s girlfriend will always give her snuggles when she’s with them too. I commiserated that it is hard having to switch houses all the time. But it just felt weak. Like, “I hear you’re upset about something and you believe I have the power to fix it and I’m just choosing not to.”

Anyways, I’d love feedback and ideas of how to hold that conversation if and when she brings it up again.
