Simple Fertilizer Plan

I am in Iowa and looking for a simple fertilizer plan. I have tried Sunday, Scott’s and Menards brand. None of these seem to do a good job.

I don’t need my lawn to look immaculate but want it to look good and be able to keep up with two kids playing on it.

If anyone has suggestions on a brand or a simple 4-6 step fertilizer schedule that would be very helpful. I don’t want to break the bank but willing to spend a little. The other plans I tried were about $150.

I have heard aerating and overseeing is key as well. I will be doing that in the early spring next year.
