Are my parents lying to me about my insurance or is this a real thing?
So to start, I have level one autism and currently I’m seventeen years old. As of now I’m not allowed to go outside the house (other than in the backyard) on my own, I can’t walk down the street or stroll my neighborhood alone, I can’t stay at home alone, and I have to have a babysitter whenever my parents go out of the house on a date, etc.
My parents say it’s due to insurance but it feels like just a cheap cop-out on my mom’s end as she is very limiting in my personal autonomy. For example I have many parental controls and restrictions on my phone; I can’t call or text someone who isn’t in my contacts and my mom or dad have to put in a pin (which is different from my iPhone password) to add someone for me, I can’t download apps without them putting in the pin, and I have a time limit on apps which causes them to shut off at 10:30 P.M.
My parents say my me not being able to be on my own is for insurance reasons and if true, then that suggests ableist views of the provider (regional centre), essentially viewing me as a dependent toddler. Apparently said insurance pays for babysitting (respite hours) and other services.
I already struggle with mental health issues such as undiagnosed BPD and the like and even if this is true about the insurance, I’d rather have those services be revoked than have to spend my life treated like a glorified child for the sake of my mental health and self esteem. Plus my parents also want to put me in a conservatorship (mainly my mom) instead of allowing me to exist as a normal adult which will probably impact me negatively down the line so that’s cool.
