Bathroom Ceiling Primer- Kilz spray?

Advice Wanted

Moving into my new apartment, my uncle fixed a small hole + crack in my plaster ceiling above the shower that seems to be caused due to the humidity from the shower. He recommended an oil based primer followed by a regular semi-gloss paint.

It’s my first apartment and I’m a little low on money, and every oil based primer I’ve found is way too much both in quantity and cost. Would it be okay if I used the spray version of original Kilz and then a semi-gloss over it?

I also already own a water-based Kilz 2 all-purpose primer, would I be okay to use that instead or should I truly shell out for the oil based?

Extra note: We have not found any evidence of mold in the bathroom and the room seems to be well ventilated, the fan is powerful and set in the wall above the shower.
