What should I do about my vegan friend at my birthday?

Relationships

Hello all, I'm terribly sorry if this isn't the right place to be asking, I just don't know where else to go.

My birthday is coming up and I'd like to host a dumpling making event for it so that I can spend it with friends. My friend is vegan (his family is Buddhist and he mostly grew up vegan) and he's always talked very passionately about animal welfare. We will of course have a vegan dumpling option for him + everyone else to share, but I would also like to make the standard dumplings that my family makes.

In the past, for another friend's birthday, we went to a ramen restaurant and he and a meat-eating friend of mine spent the majority of the meal debating their moral stances, and since they are both very into debating for the sake of it it was hard to turn the conversation. I’m worried this will happen again, and I feel bad asking him not to discuss veganism because I want to be a supportive friend, but I also want to be able to spend a nice evening with my friends and enjoy myself without having to feel guilty about the food I’m eating.

Any advice would be appreciated, and sorry again if this isn’t the right place to ask.
