Squash vine borer rage!!

Has anyone ever tried wrapping the bottom part of the main stem of your squash in plastic wrap or anything to keep the borers out or am I just being ridiculous? I been killing the bugs, pulling the eggs, and checking every day but 1/2 my squash plants still got penetrated. I’m so upset right now just needed to vent.
