Units in locked formation breaking formation on right click or alt+drag moves

I'm trying to move my army in formation but no matter what I do they break formation when moving into a new very widely spaced formation. I've tried with locked control groups, unlocked control groups, just right clicking, right click+dragging, alt+left click drag, but no matter what the group spreads out. Why? Am I doing something wrong?
