Is it worth getting a digital piano if I already have an acoustic?

Question

Hi all,

I already have a good upright acoustic piano at home (a new Kawai K350), but I’m thinking about getting a digital one (like the Roland FP‑10). The main reason: I sometimes get overwhelmed by the loudness of my acoustic piano, and it puts me off practicing — I’ve even had some ear discomfort after playing.

I’m still a beginner-to-intermediate player, and my motivation comes and goes in waves. When I do sit down, I tend to go straight to playing songs — when I know I should be focusing more on scales, chords, and technique. I feel like I’d be more likely to work on those basics if I could play quietly or with headphones, without worrying about noise or the time of day.

So I’m wondering:

Does it make sense to get a digital piano if I already have an acoustic?

Would it be inefficient to practice scales and finger exercises on a digital piano if I could be practicing on an acoustic? Is it simply better to always practice technique on the acoustic piano?

Or do you find that having a digital actually helps you practice more overall?

Any thoughts or personal experiences would be super helpful. Thanks!
