New teacher starting this fall

Hi folks, I’m starting a job teaching high school ELA and film studies this fall. It’s a career change for me (46m) and I was lucky enough to hit it off with my mentor teachers. They were instrumental in getting me hired on at the site of my student teaching. I’ll even have many of the freshman I taught in my 10th grade English class.

I’ve been the primary caregiver (stay at home dad) for my 3 elementary school aged kids since the pandemic (we’re in Northern California, which took it seriously in some places), and I still have that role over the summer. I’ve been busier than I thought I’d be, and I feel like I’m behind in my class planning. I’ve got the first couple of weeks planned (we’re on a block schedule), and my mentors recommended just planning the order of my core texts along with the essential standard I want to pair with each one. This is good for my ADHD brain but was hoping anyone had advice for a first year teacher. I’m older than than many new teachers, which helped with the classroom management aspect, but I’m still a bit nervous. Thank you.
