In 2016, São Bernardo do Campo city councilor Gustavo Henrique de Sousa left the PDT, a centre-left party, to run for mayor as the nominee of the centre-right PTN. He was the head of "Colocando São Bernardo De Volta nos Trilhos", a coalition made up of the PTN, PROS, PSDC, PSL, PTdoB, PTC, PEN, PMN, PRP and PRTB.

By running on urban development and law and order, Gustavo was easily elected to the mayoralty of this major city in the São Paulo megalopolis. As the mayor, Gustavo paved all remaining dirt roads in São Bernardo, banned dogs from the city's streets, made waste segregation mandatory, and created a low-cost restaurant program. "Gustavoísmo" was vindicated by the election of Gustavo's Hungarian-born wife Dóra Dúró to the São Paulo state assembly in 2018; she ran for the party Patriota and received 272,886 votes. The previous year, Gustavo left the PTN after it renamed itself Podemos, joining the centrist Solidariedade.

In 2020, Gustavo was reelected in the first round over former mayor Luiz Marinho and PSDB businessman Orlando Morando; Gustavo's second mayoral term was marked by the repeal of COVID safety measures as soon as a vaccine became available. In the 2022 election cycle, Dúró ran for governor of São Paulo for the Bolsonarist PTB, winning 510,886 votes and endorsing Tarcísio de Freitas in the second round. Gustavo was a candidate for the federal Chamber of Deputies on the same ballot, and was elected with 846,357 votes.
