My best friend is moving in with me… but there’s a lingering issue.

I (26F) have been best friends with my BFF (27F) for about 4 years now. I genuinely love and cherish her—we’ve been through a lot together, and she’s one of my favorite people in the world. I truly cannot emphasize how important she is to me.

That said… there’s been a long-standing issue with hygiene. And I don’t just mean the occasional BO—we’re talking an intense, sometimes “rotteny” kind of smell. Over the years, she’s improved a little, but it still lingers. I recently found out she even has a bit of a reputation among our close friends. But—and I want to be clear—she is amazing, LITERALLY beautiful, and genuinely such a cool, magnetic person. Most people just kind of accept it because we all love her so much.

Still, it’s been hard to ignore at times.

For example: two years ago, she changed clothes in the backseat of my car before we went out. The next morning, I got in to head to work and was hit with a wall of odor. I left all the windows down during my 7-hour shift, and it still reeked when I came back. Eventually, I found the source—she had left her a garment in the backseat. I’ll spare the details, but it was really unfortunately rough. I discreetly tossed it, for both our sakes.

Recently, I offered for her to move in with me so she could have an easier commute to work and a more stable home base—especially as she’s working on building a stronger relationship with her boyfriend. Honestly, I think she’d be an amazing roommate. We get along really well, respect each other’s space, and have always made coexisting feel easy. I’m genuinely excited to live with her.

But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous about the smell situation. I’ve started to realize I may not have fully thought through all the logistics—especially when it comes to shared spaces like the bathroom, laundry, and kitchen. (For example, the hot water in my washer&dryer doesn’t always work.) It’s making me slightly anxious now that move-in is around the corner. I think for my sake she will be clean, I currently dont have health insurance and I'm rationally thinking about my own hygiene. Will I contract something... ugh I already feel terrible for even saying and feeling that I'm judging my own bestfriend. But I do want to work this out for my and her comfort.

She works as a bartender, skates a lot, and smokes daily—so she’s often on the move and breaking a sweat. She bounces between her place and her boyfriend’s, and there’s this very nomadic, go-with-the-flow energy to how she lives. I’ve seen some improvement over the years, but showering, brushing her teeth, and basic hygiene still seem pretty inconsistent. I suspect there might be some mental health stuff at play too—it’s hard to know for sure, because she generally seems content.

Another concern of mine is how she might react if I bring it up. She can be a little defensive or stubborn, even over small things. One example: while we were cooking together, I joked about her using her hands to scoop out minced garlic from the jar, and she firmly denied it—despite the fact that I literally saw it. It wasn’t a big deal, but it made me pause. I don’t think she’d lash out, but I do worry that even with the gentlest approach, she might take it personally.

So I guess my question is… how do I approach this with love and care, if at all? I don’t want her to feel judged or hurt. I love her. But I also want to feel comfortable and clean in my own home. Has anyone dealt with something similar before? How can I bring it up in a way that’s honest but still kind?
