What is freight forwarding? Is it cheaper than direct shipping?

So I'm a rookie and I'm about to open up a small stationery shop. I will be sourcing my stuff from Alibaba to India and I was wondering what freight forwarding is? Does it come out to be cheaper than the manufacturer's method of shipping? Does it cover customs or will I have to pay hefty taxes? Sorry if my question sounds stupid
