Wimbledon, the crown jewel of the tennis world, is known not only for its perfectly manicured grass courts and all-white dress code, but also for its deep commitment to tradition. In an era where technology is reshaping almost every aspect of professional sports, one of the most visible shifts in tennis has been the rise of robot line judges. In October 2024, the All England Club officially announced that, beginning in 2025, Wimbledon would fully replace its 300 human line judges with Hawk‑Eye Live electronic line-calling, ending a 147‑year tradition.

Over the past few years, tournaments like the US Open and the Australian Open have adopted Hawk-Eye Live, a fully automated line-calling system that removes the need for on-court line judges. This system uses multiple cameras around the court to track the ball in real time and makes instantaneous, audible calls without human intervention. The benefits are clear, accuracy and consistency are significantly improved, and the pace of play is quicker since there’s no need for player challenges. The system also reduces human error, which, in the past, has led to controversial moments and disputed calls. With electronic line calling, a court that once required several line judges could operate with just the chair umpire present.

Despite the wave of automation, Wimbledon has remained one of the last strongholds of traditional officiating. Their presence lends a sense of history and pageantry, and their roles serve as a training ground for future chair umpires and tennis officials. Moreover, human judges can respond to unusual situations, interpret player behavior, and contribute to the atmosphere of the match, something technology cannot replicate.

Wimbledon’s reluctance to fully embrace robotic line calling underscores a larger tension between innovation and tradition in sports. While the march of technology seems inevitable, the human element, with all its imperfections and emotion, still holds a special place on Centre Court.
