Old account recovery

I tried to recover my account from ~2005 and after a few tries I think I was successful. I got an email and a character was added to my account with a gibberish name. Logged in to it and I started at tutorial island, made it through and I was just a new character, no skills or items, but I had a friend list. Is that the best I can hope for? Was that actually my old account or should I keep trying to get it restored to me?
