Teru vs. Hanako ultra analysis and what might happen next

SpoilerDiscussion

Okay, so the Teru vs. Hanako talk is a recurring battle in the series and in the fandom. But who actually is in the right? (Or rather, the one farther from left?) And when will this come to a head? Well, I've thought about it. A lot.

(Spoilers ahead!!)

First clash is in the Young Exorcist arc. (chap 9-12 ish) For this time around, I'd say Hanako is innocent. While Teru doesn't get to see the context, and probably wouldn't care either way, we the readers and Kou know that when Hanako raises his blade at Kou, it's out of frustration/anger. He's mad at Kou for naively deciding that Hanako is a good apparition even though he doesn't anything about him, and pushes aside the fact that he murdered someone one. He did what he did to demonstrate to Kou that he is not a good person, but as far as we know, never actually was going hurt him. One could argue that the only reason Teru was so hellbent on killing Hanako was simply because he was a wonder. (Though, that's not exactly a terrible reason as an exorcist)

Next, the Severance.(Chapter 84-95 ish) This time, Teru had better reason. Now, the Severance didn't exactly happen because of Hanako, as No.6 had to do with as well, but he was definitely the one who pushed it to the finish line. But Hanako did what he did for Nene. Saving Yashiro from her short lifespan had been a good of Hanako's since Picture Perfect arc, with Nene making the wish to live for 100 more years. (One she would come to regret ofc.) And when you think about it, what else could he had done? Hanako is arguably the only who cares about Nene's lifespan and has the power and will to do something about it. And when we first learned about her pending death, he didn't care about trying to save her because it seemed impossible. And it is essentially impossible.

Supernaturals, the wonders in particular, are very realistic and accepting when it comes to matters like that. Despite the regret they carry, and the wish they have, they are seen to give up without a fight because they've learned to simply accept tragedy and detach their hearts so it doesn't hurt. So when they are presented with an opportunity for that very thing, they take it no matter how intense and immense the outcome. We see this with No.4, who's wish was to protect her creator, Shijima Mei from the rumors created about her death and last art piece. She thinks that it will never be, and just accepts that fate. But when she given the chance to make her wish come true, her resolve is to kill Mei so that she doesn't finish the drawing, therefore erasing No.4's existence.

Hanako was out of ideas to save Nene and got desperate, therefore aiding in the act of the Severance and keeping Aoi in the far shore, switching Aoi's and Yashiro's lifespan. It, like No.4, was rooted all in care for Nene, but it doesn't erase the clear fact that he harmed a student, something he of all people shouldn't be doing as he is here because he killed someone in the past. He became a threat to students on purpose, and Teru had the right to exorcising him.

Then, most recent, The Red House Pt. 2, a piece of the School festival arc. (Chapters 101-126 and still going on) Teru had every right to attack Amane. If you don't know, in this new present created by the Clock Keepers to prevent the festival incident from happening, Amane grew up and was possessed by the Red house god in place of Tsukasa, luring people to the house as prey for the hole god. In fact, he lured Kou and Mitsuba to the Red House under the guise of running some errands and killed them, then using Kou in attempt to trap Yashiro. To save Nene, Teru steps him and zaps Kou, and since he was already dead and essentially in a supernatural state, the Kou of the new timeline dissapear and pretty much...well...dies.

Teru is devastated, and goes on a rampage when Amane appears, who shows no remorse and even openly admits to killing Kou with a laugh, then Teru is taken down by him after Teru attacks him in rage (for once bro won a fight). The only I have to say about this is that it is technically not Hanako-- it is an Amane that has become a puppet of the Red House, and we can see that as his eyes are black, and appears somewhat lifeless. One can only speculate that it is the hole god attacking Yashiro, Teru, Akane and Aoi through Amane's body. I imagine for Teru, it is a possible outcome of what could happen if he keeps Hanako alive, especially after Young Exorcist arc.

Now, after this incident, it would only make sense that Teru would go and finish off Hanako after they return to the original timeine. But I firmly believe, for the sake of the school and the students, it is in Teru's best interest to not exorcise Hanako.

I'd like to start by saying that Hanako is not responsible for the festival incident, nor the clock keeper trial, neither the clock keeper's decision to create a new present. He is just as innocent as Yashiro or Kou. And we're not sure if Hanako will even remember what happened in that alternate timeline--for all we know, they could return and he wouldn't have a clue about what happened.

Furthermore, Hanako is most likely the only wonder in a higher position than the clock keepers, so using his abilities could help save the school, by for an example, forcing Kako, the clock keeper of the past, to rewind time. And even if he can't do that, he could aid in destroy the possessed student harming other students or even catch Natsuhiko before he touches the big clock, as he is the only wonder other then No.6 to be seen actively engaging in combat with supernaturals. If anything, Teru needs to focus his sights on Tsukasa, the bigger problem, before going back to Hanako.

And overall in the Teru vs. Hanako debate, Teru isn't reason beyond the Severance isn't solid. Teru, as an exorcist, has been trained to exorcist harmful supernaturals, which isn't his fault because that's all he's known, but he tends to take it to the extreme. From his first official introduction into the story, his goal has been to get rid of Hanako and the rest of the mysteries. But around chapter 110, in his monologue is revealed that the absence of all mysteries would result the destabilization of the region. Furthermore, the existence of the wonders stabilize not just the school but the line between the near and far shore, as Kako complains about in chapter 61, when the absence of 3 mysteries is letting more supernaturals invest the school during Urabon. So that makes me wonder, why would Teru constantly aim to get rid of the mysteries if their absence would cause the region to crumble apart? Just seems like he didn't think it through completely. And personally, judging both morals, no one's even going to take the win.

On a lighter note, I personally wish to see Teru and Hanako get along and even fight alongside eachother, even if just for a few panels/chapters. Hanako, as the boss of the school mysteries, is trying to deal with threat Tsukasa has posed to the school, and Teru is more or less trying to do the same thing. They would had a better chance ending the whole ordeal if Teru was on their side. Think about it, a powerful exorcist, and the most powerful mystery. It could make things easier.

Work aside, there's so many parallels between Teru and Hanako that no one seems to talk about. They're more similar than people think. Both are older brothers who love and want to protect their sibling(s) but tend to be harsh/cold with them at times. Fake cheery personality that they wield in public, and are both quieter than they make themselves out to be, and not to mention they also both suck at cooking. There is some many traits they share, and I wish they would see that. But Teru despises Hanako, and the ghost most definitely returns the hatred. Either way, I believe for the sake of the school, sooner or later they're going to have to put their differences aside and team up to take down Tsukasa, though I have a bad feeling that Hanako will ultimately have to be the one to personally end him, and when that time comes I'll be shedding a few tears.

But anyway, that's just my take. What you guys think? Do you agree?
